Hilarious | Redeem KrisFlyer Miles for Malaysia Airlines Flights

Redeem Krisflyer for Malaysia Airlines Flights

In the world of frequent flyers and miles aficionados, the recent announcement from Singapore Airlines has raised more than a few eyebrows—and even more chuckles. I'm struggling to contain myself from laughing as I type out this blog post.

The notion that one can now redeem KrisFlyer miles for Malaysia Airlines flights, particularly on routes from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to London, sounds almost like the setup to a travel joke. But here's the punchline: it's real, and it's spectacularly misguided.

First, let's talk about the elephant in the cabin: the comparison between Malaysia Airlines' and Singapore Airlines' product and service offerings. It's no secret that Singapore Airlines is often hailed as the pinnacle of luxury air travel, setting high standards in comfort, cuisine, and customer service.

On the flip side, Malaysia Airlines, while commendable in its own right, doesn't quite reach the same lofty heights.

Opting to redeem your hard-earned KrisFlyer miles—a currency of luxury travel dreams—on Malaysia Airlines flights is akin to trading a gourmet meal for fast food. Sure, it fills you up, but the taste of disappointment is hard to wash down. Do you really want to spend 13 Hours in Malaysia Airlines business class product above?

The award rates for these redemption options don't do much to sweeten the deal either. They're described as "not particularly attractive," which in frequent flyer speak translates to "you're getting a raw deal." And let's not overlook the small yet irksome fuel surcharge that Malaysia Airlines tacks on to its award fares. In an era where savvy travelers meticulously plan to maximize their miles' value, this arrangement feels like a step backward.

Now, for loyal Refined Points travelers intrigued by the prospect of visiting numerous Oneworld lounges at Changi Airport, redeeming KrisFlyer miles for a short hop to KL might seem like an adventure.

However, even this quirky perk struggles to justify the poor exchange rate of luxury miles for an experience that, while novel, hardly matches the value one expects when parting with Singapore Airlines' KrisFlyer miles.

KL-London Route on Malaysia Airlines

For a one-way trip to London in Business Class, it requires:

  • 149,000 Enrich Miles (via KL)

  • 103,500 KrisFlyer Miles (via Singapore)

  • 114,000 Avios (via Singapore)

I previously wrote about the difference in miles required to travel to London in my blog post about CIMB's airline miles devaluation.

It appears that redeeming flights on Malaysia Airlines is more advantageous through virtually any frequent flyer program other than Enrich, suggesting that Enrich points are more effectively utilized on flights operated by other airlines. This strategy raises questions about its impact on fostering customer loyalty.

Furthermore, the value proposition of accruing Enrich points, either through flying or credit card points conversion, is increasingly questionable, particularly with the risk of sudden devaluations without prior communication or explanation.

Final Thoughts

In essence, this new redemption option is a curiosity, an oddity in the realm of airline loyalty programs that will likely have seasoned travelers scratching their heads. For those who find themselves contemplating this choice, a word of advice: please don't bother.

The world of airline miles is filled with opportunities to stretch your wings in style. Don't let your KrisFlyer miles fall short by settling for a significantly lesser experience.

In the grand scheme of things, choice is always a positive. Yet, in this case, it's hard not to view the inclusion of Malaysia Airlines flights within the KrisFlyer redemption spectrum as anything but a comical misstep. For anyone serious about leveraging their miles for the best possible travel experiences, this is one option that might be better left unexplored.
