Wow | AmBank Introduces Plaza Premium First Lounge Access

AmBank has announced a major revision to its airport lounge benefits, effective 1 November 2026.

On the surface, this looks like another routine update to the bank’s Plaza Premium Lounge terms and conditions. In reality, it gives us an early look at how AmBank intends to differentiate customers under its new upcoming revamp, which has been teased across social media quite a fair bit.

The revised structure introduces Gold, Platinum and Diamond reward tiers, with lounge access determined by both Assets Under Management (AUM) and the amount held in qualifying current, savings or wealth management products.

There are also changes affecting AmBank’s mass-market credit cards, but most are not particularly relevant to Refined Points readers, given how substantially poor the value proposition is. The important development is the introduction of Plaza Premium First access for selected AmBank SIGNATURE Priority Banking Visa Infinite cardholders.

The New AmBank Priority Banking Lounge Tiers

From 1 November 2026, AmBank SIGNATURE Priority Banking lounge access will be structured as follows:

AmSPB Tier

Qualification Criteria

Eligible Cards

Annual Lounge Access

Diamond

RM2 million Primary AUM, including at least RM500,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth

The Metal Visa Infinite

Unlimited Plaza Premium Lounge, Plaza Premium First and LoungeKey access

Diamond

RM2 million Primary AUM, including at least RM500,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth

AmSPB Visa Infinite/-i

12 Plaza Premium Lounge or Plaza Premium First visits

Platinum

RM500,000 Primary AUM, including at least RM100,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth

The Metal Visa Infinite or AmSPB Visa Infinite/-i

12 Plaza Premium Lounge or Plaza Premium First visits

Gold

RM200,000 Primary AUM, including at least RM50,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth

The Metal Visa Infinite or AmSPB Visa Infinite/-i

8 Plaza Premium Lounge visits

AmSPB Base Tier

Below RM200,000 AUM, or insufficient qualifying CASA/-i or wealth balance

The Metal Visa Infinite or AmSPB Visa Infinite/-i

6 Plaza Premium Lounge visits, subject to RM1,000 spend in the preceding calendar month

AmBank will also consolidate lounge entitlements at the customer level. Holding several eligible AmBank cards will therefore not allow you to stack multiple lounge quotas.

AmBank’s Ridiculous “Fake” Supplementary Lounge Access

The table published by AmBank states that principal and supplementary cardholders are eligible for lounge access from the Gold tier onwards.

That sounds generous. Unfortunately, it is nothing of the sort. AmBank has previously maintained the ridiculous rule that supplementary cardholders must satisfy the relevant AUM requirement independently.

The previous August 2026 terms and conditions explicitly stated that Primary AUM would be assessed at the individual cardholder level and could not be combined or shared between principal and supplementary cardholders.

In other words, a supplementary cardholder did not inherit the principal cardholder’s AUM status or lounge benefits. They needed to maintain their own qualifying AUM with AmBank. What the hell 😂

The November 2026 terms and conditions do not appear to fix this. Instead, AmBank now states that the "Beyond Privileges" reward tier is assessed at the individual cardholder level and cannot be combined or shared between principal and supplementary cardholders.

At the time of writing, the "Beyond Privileges" link redirects to a completely blank page as you can see below, so there's no way of telling what this actually means.

Beyond Privileges? Or Beyond Empty. Source: AmBank Beyond Privileges

Basically, this means a supplementary cardholder must independently qualify for the relevant reward tier:

  • Gold requires RM200,000 Primary AUM, including at least RM50,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth.

  • Platinum requires RM500,000 Primary AUM, including at least RM100,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth.

  • Diamond requires RM2 million Primary AUM, including at least RM500,000 in Primary CASA/-i and/or Primary Wealth.

This is supplementary lounge access in name only.

If your spouse, child or other supplementary cardholder must independently park at least RM200,000 with AmBank, they are effectively qualifying as an AmBank SIGNATURE Priority Banking customer in their own right. At that point, they could simply hold their own principal card.

As far as I am aware, AmBank is literally the only bank in Malaysia to impose such a ridiculous requirement while continuing to present the benefit as “supplementary cardholder access”.

That is not a supplementary benefit. It is two separately qualified Priority Banking customers receiving individual benefits through two different cards. Describing it as supplementary lounge access is, frankly, product theatre.

Unless AmBank explicitly confirms that supplementary cardholders will now inherit the principal cardholder’s Beyond Privileges tier, customers should assume that the old restriction remains. Supplementary cardholders who fall within the base AmSPB tier receive no complimentary lounge access at all.

A Closer Look at the Platinum and Diamond Tiers

Assuming I'm reading the annoucement correctly (which is extremely confusing), the Platinum tier is easily the most interesting part of this announcement.

Customers maintaining RM500,000 in Primary AUM, including at least RM100,000 in the relevant CASA/-i or wealth products, will receive 12X access to Plaza Premium First.

I don't have to repeat to Refined Points readers that Plaza Premium First is substantially more premium than the average contract lounge. Depending on the location, this can include a quieter environment, improved food and beverages, à la carte dining and noticeably better service.

I've extensively written about the Plaza Premium First KLIA Terminal 1, which is slightly aging, but still a much better area than the gimmicky "UOB Private Lounge".

Likewise, I recently wrote about my spectacular experience at the newly opened Plaza Premium First Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, which completely blew away all my expectations, and is arguably the best lounge that exists in Bangkok!

It's worth noting that there are very few AUM-based credit cards in Malaysia offering Plaza Premium First access. The most obvious comparison is the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite, which currently requires RM250,000 AUM and provides 8X access to Plaza Premium First locations worldwide (or should I say 4X?).

AmBank requires twice the AUM, but counters with 12X access, and is competing directly with the UOB Privilege Banking Visa Infinite's DragonPass access (more on that below).

Meanwhile, the Diamond tier becomes particularly powerful when paired with The Metal Visa Infinite, which offers unlimited access to Plaza Premium Lounge, Plaza Premium First and LoungeKey.

However, purely from a lounge perspective, moving from RM500,000 to RM2 million AUM delivers almost no incremental value, given that LoungeKey access isn't particularly mind-blowing (more on this below too), and that unlimited access, again, while unconfirmed, is only limited to the principal cardholder.

Is AmBank Competitive Again?

I have never been known to mince my words when it comes to AmBank’s credit cards, and I see no reason to start now. Basically, everything below Platinum is fairly poor.

Requiring RM200,000 AUM for nothing more than 8X access to ordinary Plaza Premium Lounges is simply not competitive in Malaysia’s current credit card market. The “Gold” branding sounds attractive, but the underlying lounge proposition is remarkably ordinary, particularly when cards such as the CIMB Travel Platinum Mastercard, CIMB Travel World Mastercard, CIMB Travel World Elite and Maybank World Elite Mastercard all provide Plaza Premium First access without requiring any AUM whatsoever.

Let’s also not forget the CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite. It requires only marginally more AUM at RM250,000, yet provides 8X access to Plaza Premium First worldwide without any monthly spending requirement or annual fee whatsoever, eventhough CIMB recently cut this in two half yearly quotas.

Things improve considerably once we move up to the AmSPB Platinum tier, where 12X Plaza Premium First access finally gives AmBank something worth discussing. However, it immediately faces stiff competition from the UOB Privilege Banking Visa Infinite, which offers 12X global access through DragonPass and permits the principal cardholder to bring one accompanying guest.

None of this makes AmBank’s new benefit bad. It simply means that Plaza Premium First access alone is not enough to make the Platinum tier a clear market leader. Its overall competitiveness will depend heavily on the rest of AmBank’s upcoming credit card benefits, particularly its airline miles earning rates and conversion proposition.

I would also argue that customers who care enough about Plaza Premium First access to maintain a RM500,000 banking relationship will probably hold more than one premium credit card anyway.

Where AmBank deserves genuine credit is the Diamond tier, or the AmSPB Metal Visa Infinite. Unlimited access to Plaza Premium First and LoungeKey is remarkably competitive and arguably the strongest airport lounge package currently offered by a Malaysian credit card.

Comparison of Competitors Lounge Access - AmBank SPB Metal VI

The Standard Chartered Beyond Visa Infinite Priority Private is limited to LoungeKey rather than Plaza Premium First. Meanwhile, the newly launched CIMB Private Wealth World Elite caps its Plaza Premium First access to 12X per year.

The UOB Visa Infinite Metal offers unlimited DragonPass access but similarly excludes Plaza Premium First, and comes with a hefty RM3,000 annual fee. Meanwhile, the newly launched HLB Opus Visa Infinite Privilege does indeed include unlimited Plaza Premium First access with guests, but also comes with a mandatory RM3,000 annual fee.

AmBank therefore offers something its closest competitors do not, which is the global breadth of LoungeKey combined with unlimited access to the much more exclusive Plaza Premium First network. That combination of breadth and quality is genuinely compelling.

Unfortunately, this otherwise excellent proposition runs head-first into AmBank’s ridiculous supplementary cardholder rule.

For a card positioned at the RM2 million AUM level, requiring a supplementary cardholder to qualify independently for Diamond before receiving the same lounge access is absurd. Affluent customers often obtain supplementary cards precisely to extend travel benefits to their spouse or immediate family, not to ask every family member to establish a separate RM2 million banking relationship.

This could ultimately become the deal-breaker. AmBank may have created one of the strongest lounge propositions in Malaysia, only to kneecap it with a supplementary access mechanic that no other bank appears to see any reason to impose.

Final Thoughts

The inclusion of Plaza Premium First is unquestionably positive, and 12X access at the Platinum tier is a strong addition, while unlimited Plaza Premium First and LoungeKey access makes the AmBank SPB Metal Visa Infinite significantly more interesting.

Unfortunately, there is still an important ambiguity. AmBank’s latest terms and conditions do not publish a specific list of eligible Plaza Premium First locations or explicitly confirm whether access extends beyond Malaysia.

Until AmBank clarifies this, I would not assume that the benefit includes Plaza Premium First locations in Hong Kong, Rome, Vancouver or elsewhere. For now, the safest interpretation is that Plaza Premium First at KLIA is the confirmed practical benefit.

That matters because CIMB and Maybank already offers clearly defined global Plaza Premium First access across several cards, including products with substantially lower qualification requirements.

More importantly, lounge access is only one component of a premium credit card. AmBank appears to be undertaking a wider refresh of its affluent and wealth propositions, and I would need to see the complete package before concluding that it has genuinely returned to the game.

The deciding factor for me will be the airline miles proposition. If AmBank introduces competitive earn rates, sensible conversion ratios and stronger airline partners, Plaza Premium First could become the finishing touch on a genuinely excellent product.

If the miles proposition remains weak, however, even unlimited lounge access will not save it.

For now, AmBank has opened the door to Plaza Premium First. Whether it has reopened the door into Malaysia’s premium credit card conversation remains to be seen.
