Review | Plaza Premium First KLIA Terminal 1 (2026)

In December 2022, I first reviewed Plaza Premium First at the Satellite Building of Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1.
That lounge subsequently closed, with Plaza Premium consolidating its operations at the Contact Pier in KLIA’s Main Terminal Building. The replacement Plaza Premium First opened in March 2023 alongside the standard Plaza Premium Lounge, where both remain today.
I was extremely impressed when I first visited the new lounge. It was quiet, beautifully designed and offered a genuinely elevated experience compared with the overcrowded Plaza Premium Lounge next door.
More than three years have now passed, however, and KLIA’s lounge landscape has changed considerably. New lounges have opened, credit card access rules have been rewritten and the Aerotrain is finally back in operation.
I therefore returned to Plaza Premium First in September 2026 to answer a more useful question: is it still the best credit card-accessible lounge at KLIA Terminal 1? The short answer is yes.
Plaza Premium First remains quieter, more polished and considerably more pleasant than the standard Plaza Premium Lounge next door. Its combination of à la carte dining, apron views, private shower suites and better crowd control makes it one of the strongest airport lounge benefits attached to a Malaysian credit card.
However, enjoying the lounge through complimentary credit card access and paying the full admission price are two completely different value propositions.

Where Is Plaza Premium First at KLIA Terminal 1?
Plaza Premium First is located airside in the Main Terminal Building of KLIA Terminal 1.
After clearing immigration, turn towards the G gates and take the escalator to Level 2. Plaza Premium First and the standard Plaza Premium Lounge share the same reception area, with the entrance to Plaza Premium First located on the right.
Do not confuse this with the former Plaza Premium First at the Satellite Building. That lounge has been permanently closed.
Plaza Premium First is most convenient for passengers departing from the G and H gates. Nevertheless, passengers departing from the C gates can still visit because KLIA’s Aerotrain is finally back in operation.
The Aerotrain connects the Main Terminal Building with the Satellite Building in under three minutes. You no longer need to endure the laborious bus transfer that previously made visiting this lounge before a C-gate departure unnecessarily stressful.
Even so, I would still leave the lounge comfortably before boarding. You must account for the walk to the Aerotrain, possible waiting time, the journey to the Satellite Building and the remaining walk to your gate.
Access to Plaza Premium First
Plaza Premium First is considerably more exclusive than the standard Plaza Premium Lounge next door. Holding a random premium credit card does not automatically grant access. Neither does an ordinary Priority, LoungeKey or DragonPass membership.
Access is instead available through selected bank arrangements, qualifying airline invitations or paid admission.
Malaysian Credit Cards With Plaza Premium First Access
As of September 2026, Malaysian-issued cards offering access include selected cards from CIMB, Maybank, Alliance Bank and Hong Leong Bank.
HLB Opus Visa Infinite Privilege
The newly launched HLB Opus provides unlimited access to participating Plaza Premium First and Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide, including Plaza Premium First at KLIA.
Each visit comes with a complimentary three-hour lounge entitlement.
This is arguably the strongest Plaza Premium First benefit offered by any Malaysian credit card. However, the HLB Opus is an invitation-only Visa Infinite Privilege card targeted at Hong Leong Bank’s wealthiest clients, so it is not exactly an accessible solution for the average traveller.

Selected CIMB Credit Cards
CIMB continues to offer the most practical route into Plaza Premium First for most Malaysians.
Eligible products include:

CIMB Travel Platinum Mastercard
CIMB Preferred Visa Infinite-i
The exact number of visits depends on the card. At the time of this update, the CIMB Travel World Elite offers 12 visits, the Travel World offers up to 12 visits, the Travel Platinum offers up to four visits and the Preferred Visa Infinite offers eight visits.
Quotas may be shared between principal and supplementary cardholders, while minimum spending or Assets Under Management requirements can apply depending on the product.
CIMB cardholders should also link their eligible card to the Smart Traveller app before visiting. The app generates the personalised QR code used for entry while allowing cardholders to monitor their remaining lounge allocation.
Selected Maybank Cards
Plaza Premium First access is also available through selected Maybank products, including:
Maybank World Elite Mastercard
Maybank Islamic World Elite Mastercard Ikhwan
Maybank American Express Platinum Charge Card
The Maybank World Elite Mastercard currently provides 16 complimentary lounge visits per year, shared between the principal cardholder and accompanying guest and allocated across two six-month periods. This is one of the card’s few remaining genuinely valuable benefits. However, given how severely Maybank has weakened the rest of the World Elite proposition, I certainly would not apply for the card purely to access this lounge.
Alliance Privilege Visa Signature
Principal cardholders of the Alliance Privilege Visa Signature receive four complimentary visits to participating Plaza Premium First and Plaza Premium Lounges worldwide. This remains a respectable benefit, although the card requires an Alliance Privilege Banking relationship.
Other Credit Cards and Airline Access
Selected foreign-issued credit cards may also provide access through specific agreements with Plaza Premium Group.
Meanwhile, certain airlines use Plaza Premium First as a contract lounge for eligible premium-cabin passengers and frequent flyers. These arrangements can change, so passengers should rely on the lounge invitation provided during check-in rather than assuming that a Business Class ticket will automatically grant entry.
Credit card entitlements are regularly revised. Always check your bank’s latest participating-lounge list, access quota and spending requirements before travelling.
Can Priority, LoungeKey or DragonPass Access Plaza Premium First?
An ordinary Priority, LoungeKey or DragonPass membership does not provide direct access to Plaza Premium First at KLIA.
These memberships generally direct passengers to the standard Plaza Premium Lounge next door or another participating lounge.
This distinction is important because some bank cards use DragonPass or another lounge platform while separately maintaining a direct agreement with Plaza Premium Group. In that situation, access comes from the bank’s specific arrangement rather than the underlying lounge membership itself.
In other words, seeing “Plaza Premium” inside an airport lounge app does not necessarily mean Plaza Premium First is included.
Lounge Seating
Plaza Premium First occupies a long rectangular space overlooking the G gates and airport apron.
The furniture is undoubtedly more attractive than what you will find in most contract lounges, but the lounge’s biggest advantage is not the design itself. It is the amount of space available per guest.
The standard Plaza Premium Lounge next door may technically be larger, but it admits substantially more credit cardholders and lounge membership users. During busy periods, it can feel like a particularly chaotic airport cafeteria. Plaza Premium First generally avoids that problem.
There is a mixture of individual armchairs, sofas, dining tables and more private seating arrangements. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide plenty of natural light during the day, while the apron views make this an excellent place for aviation enthusiasts.
Most of the seating is also located close to power sockets or USB charging points.
This is not a revolutionary lounge design. The furniture is not dramatically different from what you might find in a good hotel lobby. What you are really paying for or using an exclusive credit card benefit to obtain is a more controlled and considerably less crowded environment.
Dining at Plaza Premium First KLIA
Dining remains the clearest difference between Plaza Premium First and the standard Plaza Premium Lounge. Rather than relying entirely on a large buffet of food that has spent an indeterminate amount of time sitting under heat lamps, Plaza Premium First offers a selection of freshly prepared dishes from an à la carte menu.
Orders are placed through a QR code, with the food subsequently delivered to your table. There is generally no restriction on the number of dishes you can order, although common sense should prevail.
A smaller self-service selection is also available, typically consisting of salads, fruits, pastries, cereal and several hot dishes. The buffet is not particularly extensive, but that is largely beside the point. The reason to dine here is the made-to-order menu.
This does not suddenly become a genuine airline First 2Class dining room merely because the word “First” appears above the entrance. There is is no tasting menu, Krug Champagne or caviar service waiting for you inside.
Nevertheless, the freshly prepared dishes are a substantial improvement over the anonymous mass catering served in many contract lounges. At its best, the experience feels closer to eating in a restrained airport restaurant than attacking another generic lounge buffet.
The food was delicious. I'm particularly critical about food served in lounges as I find that most of the food at buffet spreads are below par or just plain lazy catering. In most lounges across the West, you'll likely only have typical American/Continental breakfast options, and most of the food is processed.
I'm glad that Plaza Premium First has such a wide offering, and even better that it tastes as good as it looks. Reminds me alot of the equally spectacular Cathay Pacific lounges.
The Aerobar sits in between the Plaza Premium Lounge and the Plaza Premium First lounge, so if you peek across you could see how crazy packed the lounge next door is, and you'll be forever thankful to have a CIMB Travel credit card!
Washrooms and Shower
The washrooms for both genders are separated from one another, with the Gents located further towards the back and opposite the showers.
The Showers at Plaza Premium First are excellent, and there are two available suites. You will need to enter a waitlist in advance, but generally the queue moves pretty quickly as the lounge is mostly empty.
The shower suits are generally roomy and spacious, but the highlight is the cleanliness of the suites. These are in my opinion, far greater than the shower suites at the Malaysia Airlines Golden Lounge Regional close by.
UOB Private Lounge
The UOB Private Lounge is not part of Plaza Premium First despite the registration counter being right smack in-front of the lounge, which I find pretty hilarious.
It is a restricted section within the standard Plaza Premium Lounge, created for selected UOB cardholders. Although the section provides some separation from the main dining area, it does not offer the same sense of exclusivity as Plaza Premium First.
Having personally visited both, I would choose Plaza Premium First almost every time.
Final Thoughts
Plaza Premium First remains one of the best airport lounges at KLIA Terminal 1 that can be accessed through a Malaysian credit card.
Its greatest strength is not any single piece of furniture, meal or drink. It is the combination of better crowd control, freshly prepared food, dedicated shower facilities and a genuinely calmer environment than the standard Plaza Premium Lounge next door.
The return of the Aerotrain has also made the lounge substantially more practical for passengers departing from the C gates. Visiting no longer requires the same absurdly early bus transfer that previously turned a supposedly relaxing lounge visit into a logistical exercise.
However, Plaza Premium First should be judged differently depending on how you enter.
As a complimentary credit card benefit, it is outstanding. I would deliberately arrive earlier at KLIA to enjoy it, particularly if I intended to have a meal or shower before a flight.
As a full-price lounge visit, the argument is considerably weaker. Once admission moves beyond RM300, the lounge is competing not only against other airport lounges but also against what that money could purchase elsewhere.
The newly launched HLB Opus now offers the strongest Plaza Premium First entitlement, but its invitation-only positioning makes it irrelevant to most travellers. For the average affluent Malaysian, selected CIMB Travel cards remain the most practical route into the lounge.
Either way, Plaza Premium First is still comfortably ahead of the standard Plaza Premium Lounge and UOB Private Lounge for privacy and overall experience.
Just do not mistake an excellent complimentary benefit for something everyone should willingly pay full price to experience.
