This news has been floating around in the last few days, but I decided to cover it anyways as I know many of you love travelling to London.
Starting January 8, 2025, Malaysians traveling to or transiting through the UK will need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new requirement is part of the UK’s ongoing effort to enhance its border security. The ETA is similar to systems already in place in countries like the US and Australia.
An ETA will cost £10 (approximately RM57) and allows multiple trips to the UK for up to six months at a time over a two-year period, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. It's important to note that the ETA is not a visa.
If you plan to stay in the UK for more than six months, such as for work or studies, you’ll still need to apply for the appropriate visa. Additionally, anyone with a valid UK visa is exempt from this requirement.
Applications for the ETA can be submitted starting November 27, 2024. The easiest way to apply is through the UK ETA app, though applications can also be made via the UK government’s website. Typically, approval takes up to three working days, though faster results may be possible through the app.
This new system will help streamline entry into the UK, making the process faster and more secure for the millions of people who pass through UK borders each year.
Final Thoughts
This doesn't seem like too much of a bad thing, especially from the perspective of crowd control. The queues at Heathrow can get absolutely crazy especially if you land during peak hours, so perhaps this fee might deter some travellers from making that trip.
If you’re planning a trip to the UK, it’s important to apply for your ETA well in advance. With the process being digital and relatively quick, it’s designed to make entry more convenient for visitors, but it’s still crucial to ensure everything is in order before your travel dates.
Keep in mind, the ETA is only needed for short stays, so longer visits will still require a full visa.
